Wah Gwaan, a Jamaican creole expression that means literally ‘What’s going on?’, but is a greeting that’s common in South London as: ‘What’s up?’

Well there’s quite a lot ‘up’ with the Wah Gwaan Fun Golf Group. It’s a bunch of golfers who range in age and golf ability but have the required sense of humour to cope with all the banter. From Olympians, millionaires, entrepreneurs, educators, IT marvels, we even have our own medic.  The home club is Woldingham Golf Club but quite a few of the group are affiliated elsewhere. There are regular events spread across a variety of venues, some even north of Watford. Small amounts of cash change hands. There are recently introduced singles and pairs competitions and, apart from this COVID year, a week in Turkey every October. And let’s not forget the unique handicapping system, which surprisingly works well, throwing up unlikely winners and losers.

The group is ‘managed’ by the select few, the committee, who possess the official shirt in red, denied to everyone else who settle for blue, white or black. Wear the wrong colour at an event and a fine ensues! Oh, and to join, you’ll need the thumbs up from the boys in red!
